Generating income by sharing your clinical knowledge
Many private practice owners I speak to have invested tens of thousands of dollars and hours into their clinical know-how. This positions them as master clinicians, a fact that their team and clients are grateful for. However, there are several ways that they can gain further financial benefit from their clinical wisdom. Clinical supervision, mentoring, education sessions are just a few.
We tend to think that we can only provide clinical guidance (I can’t stand the expression ‘clinical supervision’) to colleagues in the same discipline. I disagree. Everybody needs to know about sensory processing, attention, self-regulation, child development, sleep, anxiety, social skill development, eating, school readiness and so on. Such topics are discipline agnostic, enabling you to commercialize your specific knowledge to a wider market ethically and easily.
Have you ever thought about bundling content for a series of sessions?
Some topics naturally have several parts or cluster with other topics. How could you bring the relevant content together to deliver three 50-minute education sessions? Yes, there is some prep required up front, but then you have a product that you can reuse. The price of the first few sessions you deliver may seem out of proportion but the more you do the more profitable they become. We describe this as developing an asset that can generate income from a different source.
You don’t have to deliver this content face to face. We have inexpensive webinar and video conference technology so let’s throw ourselves in and use it. This enables you to reach customers nationally, even globally. The presentations can be recorded and with the right permissions, they can potentially be resold. Nice.
People will need to know that you are expanding your clinical education and mentoring services
Could you add a tab on your website and have a landing page that briefly outlines your services? Remember to make it easy for your future customers and include a ‘contact me directly’ email link. Plan and send a social media campaign promoting your clinical supervision services, include a call-to-action that encourages them to click the link in the post that takes them to the landing page on your website, or brings them directly to your email. Many people will want to know a little more about you before they commit, so an informative web page is a good step.
As the disability sector grows more and more, health, disability and education professionals will be seeking performance development opportunities. I would like to encourage you to think about spreading your teaching and mentoring wings sooner rather than later. Eventually this part of the market will be very busy, so it is ideal if you can build profile and results ahead of the crowd.
