Building Trust in Allied Health: The ABCD Model

Trust is the cornerstone of any successful relationship, whether personal or professional. In the Allied Health sector, trust is particularly crucial as it directly impacts patient care, team collaboration, and overall business success. The ABCD Model of Trust (developed by Ken Blanchard, Cynthia Olmstead, and Martha Lawrence) provides a comprehensive framework for understanding and building trust. This blog will explore the four elements of the ABCD Model—Able, Believable, Connected, and Dependable, and offer actionable steps for Allied Health Business Owners to strengthen trust within their teams.

Able: Demonstrating Competence

Being ‘Able’ means demonstrating competence and reliability in your role. In the Allied Health sector, this translates to consistently delivering high-quality care, an exceptional employee experience and staying updated with the latest industry standards.

Actionable Steps

Continuous Learning: Invest in ongoing professional development for yourself and your team. Attend workshops, webinars, and conferences to stay current with industry advancements. Don’t forget to leverage your in-house talent as well.

Quality Assurance – Decide and document the standards you require across your team, implement regular quality checks and audits to ensure that the services provided meet the required standards.

Mentorship Programs – Establish mentorship programs where experienced staff can guide and support newer team members. Explore external mentoring, supervision and training options to support clinical, management, leadership and operational excellence.

Questions to Consider

  • How do you currently measure the competence of your team?
  • What professional development opportunities are available to yourself and your employees?

Believable: Building Integrity

‘Believable’ individuals are those who exhibit integrity and honesty. In an Allied Health setting, this means being transparent with clients and colleagues, admitting mistakes, and maintaining confidentiality.

Actionable Steps

Transparent Communication – Foster an environment where open and honest communication is encouraged. Hold regular team meetings to discuss challenges and successes.

Ethical Standards – Develop and enforce a code of ethics that outlines acceptable behaviors and practices.

Confidentiality Training – Provide training on the importance of patient confidentiality and the legal implications of breaches.

Providing and receiving feedback. Take steps to develop a feedback culture where respectful feedback is invited and accepted as part of business as usual.

Questions to Consider

  • How do you handle mistakes within your team?
  • What measures are in place to ensure patient confidentiality?

Connected: Fostering Relationships

Being ‘Connected’ involves building strong, empathetic relationships with both colleagues and patients. This element is vital in Allied Health, where teamwork and patient rapport are essential.

Actionable Steps

Active Listening – Train your team in active listening techniques to improve communication and understanding.

Team-Building Activities – Organise regular team-building activities to strengthen relationships and improve collaboration. Remember to survey team interests and preferences, one size certainly does not fit all with such activities. Zip lining anybody?

Personal Engagement – Develop strategies to engage clients in their care plans, making them feel valued and heard. The same applies to engaging employees in the performance and learning experiences, nothing to be afraid of and to embrace the opportunity of being a lifelong learner.

Questions to Consider

  • How do you currently build relationships within your team?
  • What strategies do you use to engage patients?

Dependable: Ensuring Reliability

‘Dependable’ individuals are those who can be counted on to follow through on commitments. In Allied Health, dependability ensures that patients receive consistent care and that team members can rely on each other.

Actionable Steps

Clear Expectations – Set clear expectations for roles and responsibilities within your team. Then managers need to consistently and respectfully hold people to account on tasks that are expected of them.

Accountability Systems – Implement systems to track and hold team members accountable for their tasks.

Punctuality Policies – Establish and enforce policies regarding punctuality and attendance, yes for your employees and your clients.

Questions to Consider

  • How do you ensure that team members are reliable?
  • What systems are in place to track accountability?
